Dog missing toe-nail?

My fiance's moms lab has a missing toe-nail on his back leg and he's limping.

She's going to take her to the vet.

But I want to know if anyone has had this happen? What could it be?

She wont' let us touch it, she's a lab and an outdoor dog. She still runs around, but sometimes she picks her leg up and limps. She doesn't seem to be in pain, but does lift it up.Dog missing toe-nail?
It's fine. My little pooch lost a nail and it was because we hadn't clipped his nails in a while. He wasn't in pain or anything, he just went without a nail for a while. it will grow back soon and yea.Dog missing toe-nail?
Oh yeah, my crazy dogs have ripped their nails. It's usually not a big deal, but if your dog won't let the vet exam it, they may have to sedate her to treat it.

If she's limping and not using the paw, then she's in pain.

What usually happens is that a nail snags on something - between boards on a porch, or on the carpet and the dog keeps going and leaves the nail behind.
yes i have had that happen to my Pomeranian and all she did was caught her paw on a little stump and that pulled her nail out
