I was outside in barefeet and rammed my pinkie toe into the corner of my porch. When I got inside I noticed my toe was bleeding pretty bad. I hobbled over, grabbed a clean towel and started to wipe the blood away. It hurt a little but I'm clumsy and stub my toes all the time. As I was cleaning up the blood I felt the skin on the top of my toe stretch a little and then break away. I look in the towel and low and behold my entire pinkie toe nail right there. I know very Hostel the movie, but my question is...what now? The bleeding is mostly stopped, but do I need to keep it covered and bandaged or let it air? Is it safe to use Neosporin or something like that on the open nail bed? It hurts a little (maybe a 3 on the 1-10 scale - nothing excrutiating but a lot less then I thought for having removed an attached part of anatomy) Should I be more worried about infection? Is it safe to wear my tennis shoes or should I stick with flip flops until it heals? This may be gross but I just accidently ripped out my pinkie toe nail...?
Clean with soap and water, then definately put an anti-bacterial formula on your area and cover with sterile bandage. Keeping this area clean is the biggest concern. Change bandage daily, keep on antibacterial cream and sterile bandages. The nail bed will grow back approximately 1/8 of an inch a month. This will take some time and it might be rough or ridges when it does grow back if you have damaged the nail bed. Trim back and skin or nail that can catch socks, stockings etc to prevent it from being pulled open again. File down area with clean file once the area has healed over. Keep checking the area for redness, pain, buring sensations to prevent infections. When in doubt check it out. You will see some brusing around the area and it will be visible for some time until the nail grown out. I have felt your pain sorry it happened. I wore my closed toe shoes that had some more space because I needed to make sure I didn't hit it again on any thing or have someone bump into or step on it! Flip flops later after the pain subsides and ';airing'; out. OTC for pain and inflamation, but always check with your medical providers to make sure it is appropriate for you and make sure it has no interactions with other medical conditions and or prescriptions you are taking. This may be gross but I just accidently ripped out my pinkie toe nail...?
Let me say one thing first: OUCH.
Bandage it up and put Neosporin on it. Infection can happen, but probably not if you keep it clean. The biggest thing will be the pain. Eventually, the nail bed will heal and callus over enough to be fine without bandages and your nail will grow back. Wear whatever shoes you want as long as your wound keeps covered.
it will grow back. don't worry about it. one of my fingernails... i mean the whole darn thing came off.... when i was a child. it grew back. you can wear tennis shoes.
Owwww! Glad to know it was an accident...I'd hate to learn you did it on purpose. Keep it clean and covered until a new skin has formed. Use Neosporin or any triple-antibiotic to prevent infection. Wear comfortable shoes; no high-heels or any other similar footwear. Change the covering at least once daily and treat with TLC. Take it easy and watch out for those hard immovable objects.
DO NOT TAKE IBUPROFEN!
Ibuprofen can potentially harm your baby! Safest otc pain killer for use during pregnancy is Acetaminophen. Even so, keep the dose as low as possible... just enough to dull some of the pain/discomfort.
Just keep the toe clean... wash your feet often and keep reapplying an antibiotic ointment. You'll be fine wearing shoes, just make sure you have confortable shoes with plenty of padding around the toe.
Fingernails require 4 to 6 months to regrow completely. Toenails require 12 to 18 months. Actual growth rate is dependent upon age, season, exercise level, and hereditary factors.
Good luck on your upcoming child!
